Ethics of research from the perspective of developing countries: Pakistan as a case study

Aisha Malik

The application of global ethical principles to clinical research poses particular challenges for developing countries because of their particular economic and political conditions, cultural norms and religious practices. The primary aim of the research is to ascertain what currently informs ethical decision making by medical researchers in a developing country like Pakistan. It will identify the commonalities and the discrepancies between global ethical principles and current local medical practise with the purpose of developing indigenous ethical guidelines for medical research, that can be applied in developing country and cross-cultural settings.

The project is funded by a Wellcome Trust Bioemdical Ethics Studentship. It is jointly supervised by Dr.Alison Shaw (Ethox), Dr. Muhammad Anwar(CHPS-Pakistan) and Professor Michael Parker(Ethox).
