The successful and appropriate translation of medical research into health care practice can

present a wide range of important ethical challenges. If ethical and social issues are not identified,

analysed and sensitively and appropriately addressed as the research progresses, they have the

potential to become significant roadblocks to the successful completion of the research and its

translation into important health benefits. The Ethox Centre has a major research interest in the

ethical issues arising in the day-to-day practice of medical research.

The Ethox team is currently carrying out research on the following issues in research ethics:

• Ethical issues in the translation of genomic research on coronary artery disease into clinical practice (PROCARDIS)

• Ethical and social issues arising out of the translation of genomic research into the care and treatment of patients with inflammatory bowel disease

• The relationship between research and clinical practice

• The use of medical records in research
• The Oxford Biomedical Research Centre
