Geoffrey Lairumbi is a research student working towards his doctorate, supported by a Wellcome Trust Bioethics Studentship. His research topic is “Benefit Sharing: The Ethical Concept and Practice in Kenya.”
His research will use Kenya as a case study, to describe and analyse the use of the concepts “social value” and “benefit sharing”, and how these influence and shape strategies for maximizing benefits of international collaborative health related research in developing countries. In particular, his work will explore empirically how social value of research is understood and the extent to which it is prioritized as an outcome of research; explore the mechanisms and strategies that exist to guide efforts to promote the social value of research and the challenges encountered in doing so. In addition, his work will examine how responsibility for proving research benefits is apportioned and the mechanisms through which such decisions are made within the health research system in Kenya. He will use two tracers (malaria and HIV vaccine trials) to focus the discussion over benefit sharing and the social value of research
