I am carrying out a DPhil research project on the ethics of research in emerging infectious diseases. My DPhil is funded by a Wellcome Trust Studentship and is supervised by Professor Jeremy Farrar at Oxford University Clinical Research Unit, Viet Nam and Professor Michael Parker at Ethox Centre, UK. Viewing the research landscape as an interaction between the public, health care providers, research sponsors, investigators, healthcare workers, ethical review boards, patients, and with wider implications my research will seek to identify and map the range of ethical issues in Influenza (as a model of a rapidly emerging infectious disease) triggered by legitimate interests and duties of each party in this relationship. The research is mainly based in Viet Nam with the collaboration of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Viet Nam Ministry of Health, SEAICRN, Medicine sans Frontiers (MSF), World Health Organization (WHO), Ethox Centre - Oxford University.
My first degree was in Social Sciences (2006) and I am currently doing a Law degree in Viet Nam. I have been in the post of Coordinator of the Clinical Trials Unit, Hospital for Tropical Diseases, Vietnam for 3 years. With this position, my main responsibilities are 1) to assist Principal Investigators with preparation of clinical research protocols, institutional and ethical submissions, 2) to establish and maintain site regulatory files of all studies in the Unit, and 3) to work with study staff to monitor activities and perform quality assurance and quality control checks to make sure that all requirements are met and that the protocol and all study-specific procedures are being followed correctly. Until now, I have been involved in two major studies that have been completed under an investigational new drug (IND); Typhoid Vaccine Trial (MS01.08) and Influenza SEA 001. In addition, I am a member of South East Asia Infectious Disease Network (SEAICRN) Coordinating Centre. My main role in the NCC is to liaise with Principal Investigators at sites and NCC for project submission, and provide guidance to study staff in the general operation of the Network.
