Alison Shaw is a Social Anthropologist whose first degree was in Human Sciences. She has research interests in medical anthropology, kinship and marriage, race and ethnicity, the South Asian diaspora and the social implications of genetics. Her recent work focuses on Pakistani marriage trends, perceptions of consanguinity and genetic risk, and the clinical construction of genetic diagnoses. She has recently completed a Wellcome-Trust funded research project under the Biomedical Ethics Programme, entitled ‘A study of the impact of genetic risk information on families of Pakistani origin referred for genetic counselling’.
