Biography

Aisha Malik is a doctoral research student supported by the Wellcome Trust Studentship grant in Biomedical Ethics. She is a medical graduate from the University of Punjab, with M Phil in Haematology. She is a haematologist --both laboratory and clinical, as well as a teacher and researcher. Her research has been mainly on acquired coagulation disorders—which is her area of interest. After completing her MSc in Global Ethics from the University of Birmingham, she is now working towards her D.Phil at Ethox. Her project is on the ethics of medical research from the perspective of developing countries, using Pakistan as a case study.

The application of global ethical principles to clinical research poses certain challenges for developing countries because of their particular economic and political conditions, cultural norms and religious practices. The primary aim of this D.Phil research is to ascertain what currently informs ethical decision making by medical researchers in a developing country like Pakistan. It will identify the commonalities and the discrepancies between global ethical principles and current local medical ethics practice; with the purpose of forming ethical guidelines for medical research, which can be applied in developing country and cross-cultural settings. Aisha’s work is jointly supervised by Dr.Alison Shaw(Ethox),Dr.Muhammad Anwar(www.CHPS.edu.pk) and Professor Michael Parker(Ethox).
